What is the Difference between an Rbt and a Bcba in Home Therapy?
In home-based ABA therapy, the Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) and the Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) fulfill distinct yet complementary roles to ensure effective care.
The primary differences between these roles include:
- Role and Authority: The BCBA serves as the clinical leader and program designer, responsible for conducting assessments and creating individualized treatment plans. The RBT is the implementer who works directly with the child day-to-day to deliver the therapy sessions.
- Qualifications: A BCBA must hold a master’s degree in behavior analysis or a related field, complete 1,500 to 2,000 hours of supervised fieldwork, and pass a national certification exam. An RBT is an entry-level position requiring a high school diploma, 40 hours of specialized training, and a competency assessment.
- Responsibilities: The BCBA analyzes data, monitors progress, and adjusts teaching strategies. The RBT is responsible for delivering the prescribed therapy and collecting real-time data on the child’s skill acquisition and behavior.
