How does Functional Communication Training (fct) Reduce Problem Behaviors?
Functional Communication Training (FCT) reduces problem behaviors by identifying the underlying purpose of a challenging action and teaching a child a more socially acceptable way to express that same need. Instead of relying on frustration or problem behaviors, children learn to use a replacement behavior that effectively communicates their desires.
This process involves several key components:
- Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA): A Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) conducts an assessment to uncover the child’s “communicative intent” or the reason behind the behavior.
- Teaching Replacement Behaviors: Children are taught specific, functional ways to communicate, such as using vocal speech, sign language, picture exchange cards (PECS), or a speech-generating device.
- Reinforcement: When the child uses the new communication method, they are immediately rewarded with what they requested. At the same time, reinforcement for the old, challenging behavior is withheld (a process called extinction).
- Consistency and Generalization: Caregivers are trained to prompt and reinforce these new communication skills during daily routines like meals and play. This helps the child understand that the new communication method works in all environments, eventually making the problem behavior unnecessary.
