When vocal speech is not the primary or most effective communication method for a child, Functional Communication Training (FCT) utilizes several evidence-based alternatives known as Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC). These tools serve as a replacement behavior, allowing the child to express their needs and reduce frustration.
The following are the primary evidence-based alternatives to vocal communication:
- Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS): This is a low-tech system where a child learns to hand a specific picture card to a communication partner to make a request. It is often best suited for nonverbal children or those with limited motor skills.
