What are the Steps to Implement Fct in an Aba Program?
Implementing Functional Communication Training (FCT) within an ABA program involves a systematic process led by a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA). The goal is to replace challenging behaviors with socially acceptable communication.
The steps to implement FCT include:
- Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA): A BCBA conducts an assessment to identify the communicative intent or function behind a child’s challenging behavior.
- Identify a Replacement Behavior: The clinical team selects an equivalent replacement behavior. This could be vocal speech, Sign Language, a Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS), or a Speech-Generating Device (SGD).
- Individualized Program Design: A custom plan is created that weaves the chosen communication modality into the child’s daily routines, such as meals and play.
- Training and Implementation: The child is taught to use the new communication method. Reinforcement is provided when the child uses the replacement behavior, while reinforcement for the challenging behavior is withheld (extinction).
- Caregiver and Sibling Training: Family members are trained to use the system so they can prompt and reinforce the child consistently across all environments, helping the child generalize their new skills.
- Data-Driven Progress Monitoring: Registered Behavior Technicians (RBTs) and BCBAs track progress using frequency, duration, or latency data and adjust the plan as necessary to ensure continued growth.
